Barely one month into his new job, U.S. Rep. Todd Young (R-Ind. 9th District) visited North Vernon Monday afternoon to tour the Onspot of North America facility and to talk to the North Vernon Aviation Board.

"I've hit the ground running," said Young, a Bloomington resident who unseated former Congressman Baron Hill (D-Seymour) last November.

Young spent about an hour at Onspot, talking with owner Irv French and employees there as he looked over the private firm's production process.

"You are not an afterthought," Young told French. "Your products are most impressive."

Onspot, which employs around two dozen workers in North Vernon, manufactures automatic tire chain assemblies. It also has facilities in Stratford, Conn.; Evans, Colo.; and Pilot Hill, Calif. In addition, French owns On Site Manufacturing in Austin where it manufactures PEACH (packaged electrical, air condition and heating) units and THERMOCLAVE insect extermination units. Young scrutinized all of the products during the hour he was at Onspot.

"In this down economy, it is exciting what you are doing," Young said to French. "This is a classic example of how to create jobs. This is a great example of determination and creativity applied to the business world."

French and his staff pitched the PEACH units as valuable weapons for first responder agencies. With the Super Bowl coming up next year in Indianapolis, the units would be ideal as standby facilities in case of emergencies there, Young was told. Those units, which are powered by a diesel generator providing both HVAC and electricity, could then be distributed to Indiana agencies afterwards.

Young and his entourage went into a tent set up outside the plant that was toasty warm while temperatures outside were freezing. The display showed how the PEACH units can be utilized as a shelter, field hospital, command center, staging facility and other needs in an emergency.

The PEACH device was born out of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. According to the Onspot and On Site staff, first responders said such units would have been invaluable then as well as in a myriad of other emergency situations.
